There was no live recording today, so Keith presents a story from the days of
classic, old time radio. Lux Radio Theater presented movies with the scripts
altered from movie version, to an audio drama. Today's feature wasn't ever a
movie, but it is based on a play, based on a book, written by a minister's
wife, and based on their real life. Whew! As indicated in the title, the show
aired in 1942, on April 20. Sponsored by the Lux soap company, we take
liberties to snip out commercials.
After a few housekeeping bits of information concerning the chat room, how to
send input for our upcoming 100th episode, and our new voicemail number, Keith
gets the show rolling.
The story is based on the real lives of the Spence family, and set in the time
around the First World War. Rev Spence is a poor Methodist minister, with a
growing family. Listen in for some behind the scenes glimpses in a pastor's
life as he struggles with a meager income, Dealing with the snooty, and
ingrained ways of the congregation over all manner of his personal and public
life. Preacher's families have their own ordeals in spiritual matters, the same
as anybody else, and when a house fire comes, it actually carries a blessing
with it.
Through the war years, and several dreary parsonages later, Rev Will Spence is
frustrated with the poor condition he is expected to live in, while his
parishioners live in relative luxury.
His advancing career leads him to deal with the social standing of influential
church members, building projects, and conflicts with staff. Challenges to long
standing ways threaten to not only tear the church members apart, but vicious
rumors are spread that disparage the pastor's family.
Will it lead to a need to move? Will the green pastures at the new church, with
higher pay be the reward the family has been seeking from God? A little
righteous indignation goes a long way to reclaim some errant members of the
flock, and restore unity in the building project. Is this the end of the story?
As far as the drama is concerned, but the Spencer were still around, and still
ministering at the time this was produced.
In epilog, as was the format of the show, Cecil B Demille spends a few moments
with the stars, and introduces the radio drama for next week. As for us, we'll
be back to our usual recording routine next week, so be prepared for that.
