Correct. Monitoring with the external mic sure does work well though. I absolutely rely on this ability when recording my podcasts.

I don't think there's a way to monitor with the internal mic, but I can with
the external ones.

Does anyone know with the Iriver IFP899 if you can monitor the internal
microphone recordings via the headset?  Currently when I record, nothing
plays out of the headphone jack.

If this is possible, does anyone know how to set the applicable option?
