I'll try to do that. For some reason, my fingers automatically want to
go in that position. I'm not sure if it's because I haven't had any
hands-on training; I basically taught myself how to use Voiceover.

When you perform gestures that involve more than one finger, try moving
your fingers just slightly apart. You might find that you'll get more
accurate results that way. This is also true for double-tap gestures, such
as when you tap with two fingers to stop or start a piece of music. When a
user's fingers are very close together I've seen instances where VoiceOver
doesn't interpret the gesture correctly.
