The Creators Update is really a specific version of Windows. As you know,
all software programs have version numbers which the software developers
assign to the program. We've all run across these version numbers, such as
version 18 of JAWS or 2017.2 of NVDA. Windows 10 also has version numbers
for the various updates. However, Microsoft doesn't want its users to worry
about or focus on which version of Windows 10 they are running and so they
give names to each version, along with the version number. The latest
version of Windows 10 is Version 10.0.15063 Build 15063. However, version
10.0.15063 really doesn't sound exciting to most of us, myself included, and
nobody is going to remember such a number. They could just call it Windows
10.5 or Windows 11 but they really want the Windows 10 brand to be the last
version of Windows, with continual updates coming down the pike to refresh
it and to add features and fix bugs. So, to make it easier for people to
remember, Microsoft assigns a name to each version and so the latest version
of Windows, which is Version 10.0.15063 Build 15063, is called the
Creators Update. It's possible that your computer already has that
particular version of Windows 10 already installed. If it doesn't, it's
likely that the Creators Update will eventually install itself. I honestly
cannot think of a good reason why you should not update, since all Windows
updates are free and performance may even improve. Also, Narrator continues
to become more accessible with each major update. Yes, feel free to update.
However, updating to a new version of Windows is not a ten-minute process
and there will be a short period of limbo where you will lose speech from
NVDA during the update. However, if this happens you can press
Windows+control+enter to start Narrator, which will talk you through the
update during the time when NVDA cannot load. The process may take several
hours and it's always advisable to back up any critical documents or other
files that you have, in the rare event that updating could corrupt files.
You may want to ask your sighted husband to assist during the update
process, if any of this makes you nervous. However, everything should go
smoothly.
