I used to send my Brailler to a facility in Vacaville California. It was
referred to as a medical facility. However, I believe it was part of a prison.
The inmates interested in doing volunteer work for blind people, joined that
group. They repaired Brailers, made Beep Balls, which were made of a soft,
spongy material and the beep mechanism was concealed within those balls. They
also read books on tape, which were large, seven inch open reel audio tapes,
until cassettes became popular. I don't recall what the price was, though I'm
inclined to say it varied depending on what the Brailer needed. Unfortunately,
that service was discontinued due to a riot by some of the inmates. The
organization had its own newsletter as well, which patrons of the service
received free of charge. Oklahoma's a lot closer than California, a good point.
