I’m not David but perhaps I can attempt to clear up the murky waters.
By your description it almost sounds like your iPhone is accessing through IMAP
as it’s able to delete a message and then it doesn’t appear on your pc. That
check box usually means that once a message downloads to your pc for instance
it wouldn’t remain on the server thus if you accessed later on your iPhone you
wouldn’t see it you’d only see it on your pc the first device using pop to
which the message was downloaded.
When IMAP is used by all devices any changes you’d make on one device would
sync to all devices. The issue specific to Outlook the email client and GMail
the email service is when one deletes a message from GMail within Outlook it
isn’t completely being deleted. Imagine you pick up a piece of paper from your
desk and threw it into the trash can but it cloned itself and left a copy
inside your desk drawer. Even though you threw it away it left a copy of itself
behind. That’s the issue Outlook has because it isn’t playing nice with GMail.
It is specific to this client and this particular email service not all
services and not all clients.

Maybe I’m a little confused re the difference between imap and pop3. I use pop3
and somewhere in the settings there is a checkbox that says something like when
I download messages to a device then delete them from the server. Sorry for the
vagueness but it’s been quite some time since I had to perform a new set-up of
an email client.
This means that when I access an email on my iPhone and delete it from that
device, it doesn’t show up the next time I open outlook on my laptop.
I guess where I’m not clear is the part about gmail and deletion issues.
Or maybe I just need more coffee. <grin>

I also prefer Imap over Pop3. I like having the ability to delete an email
message from my iPhone or computer and know that the message will be removed
from whatever device I use to check my email. It also means that I can perform
a task such as moving an email message into a specific folder and know that the
message is moved globally, regardless of what device I use to check for mail.

because these days it's more stable and allows for accessing your email from
more than one device with instant syncing. I'd never wish to go back to pop and
it wouldn't surprise me if at some future point email providers and clients

happy and well. Now that I've needed to get a new computer I find that I can no
longer use Windows Live Mail as an email client as its spell checker is
officially dead in this machine. This leaves me stuck between the use of
Thunderbird or Microsoft Outlook which I have through my Office 365
subscription. I would prefer to use Outlook however, it has a nasty issue with
the deletion of emails when accessing GMail through the IMAP protocol which I

implement. I've reported the issue to Microsoft and Google to no avail. All
that to explain why I ask the following. If anybody uses Outlook.com email can
