Discovery Plans to Launch a Streaming Service Starting at $6 a Month
For some time Discovery has been talking about launching a subscription
streaming service. Now it looks like with their deal to buy Scripps, the parent
company of channels such as HGTV, that it’s close to becoming a reality.
This week Discovery Communications CEO David Zaslav said when the Scripps deal
is done they will be looking at a streaming service.
“We will be looking hard at that both domestically and internationally,” said
Zaslav. “We could create a pretty compelling offering for $6, $7 or $8 that
would look a lot different than Amazon Prime and Netflix, and it could be very
attractive in every language globally. So we’ll keep our eye on that.”
Discovery is not the only service talking about their own streaming service.
Recently Viacom announced plans to launch an ad-supported streaming service by
the end of 2018.
While this is not true à la carte TV because you will be buying content from
multiple channels at once not single channels, this is a step in the right
direction.
