This email arrived via blind democracy, so I guess that means you are
getting through. Still nothing from Miriam, via BD. I like your
example of the violin. Having been an aspiring Jascha Heifetz, being
the recipient of my aunt's violin, I have seen the collection of
decent violins gathering dust in hock shops around the country. Yes,
I used to wander among the Pawn Shops just to see if I might find
Aladdin's Lamp, or some similar unnoticed treasure.
But why can't we have a cheap, plastic, Japanese computer that just
gives us email and google? 99% of what is here before me is
worthless.

What a nuisance! If only we could get these blasted computers set up, and
they would continue to work…but with all the updates, etc., it’s a constant
struggle with the tools. Arg.
When I taught beginner kids, I always advised the parents to buy the small
violins made in factories in Japan, usually. They were much cheaper, and
they worked well. The last thing a beginner needs is to be struggling with
an instrument that has to be coaxed into producing sound, and until you
spend a whole lot of money on a hand-made violin, made by a luthier, that’s
exactly what you are doing. When you play well, it is rewarding to learn the
idiosyncrasies of an instrument and work with it to produce your own sound,
tone, etc. But that is not possible for a beginner, and it can be very
frustrating for said beginner. When the kid is ready for a full-sized violin
and/or is advanced enough, the parents can put all the money they saved in
buying the factory-made little violins into buying a good quality “real” (as
I like to call them) violin.
Same with us and computers…the computer whiz can use Linnux and all the
techie stuff, can work around the problems, knows what deleting cookies
means and how to do it and why…not me! Or you either, I guess!
