I just heard a lovely interview with Jason Stanley, who is a philosophy
professor and who wrote a book called How Propaganda Works. The interview
covered a lot of stuff and, of course, it covered the political atmosphere
in the US at this time. The interviewer asked Professor Stanley if he is
hopeful about the future. His response was, "Optimism of the will and
pessimism of the intellect".
