Subject: We must stop an unauthorized war with Iran

Carl,
Yesterday on the Senate floor, I spoke out about the frightening and
uncertain moment our country is in after President Trump's reckless
escalation of tensions with Iran.
The bottom line is that the Trump Administration's recent moves are
putting our national security at risk and making all of us less safe.
In 2002, when the Bush Administration asked us to go to war in Iraq
without providing adequate justification, plans, or goals -- I voted
no. Now, the Trump Administration is attempting to get away with
bypassing Congress altogether, without a minute of congressional
debate or even a notification before putting us on the brink of war
with Iran with the killing of Qasem Soleimani.
I am the daughter of a WWII veteran and Purple Heart recipient.
Supporting our troops is personal for me, and I approach matters of
national security with deep concern for the sacrifices made by our
troops and their families. I wholeheartedly believe that we should do
everything we can to fight terrorism and defend our national security,
but President Trump's impulsive and unauthorized escalation of
tensions with Iran have taken us backward when it comes to both these
priorities.
In the Senate, I am working to hold this President accountable by
demanding that President Trump come before Congress to provide legal
justification for his actions, and explain how he will handle their
consequences. I am also co-sponsoring a war powers resolution that
will reaffirm the constitutional role of Congress and prevent further
escalations with Iran without authorization.
The power to declare war rests with Congress -- not the President. It
is our constitutional role and responsibility to put a check on
President Trump and prevent him from recklessly starting a war with
Iran and sending our troops into harm's way without proper debate or
legal justification. It is up to my colleagues in the House and Senate
to do everything in our power to stop this.
I will keep you updated as this situation progresses. And as always,
let's keep all of the courageous women and men of our armed forces in
our prayers during this tumultuous time.
