People keep saying that Trump wants to go back to 50 years ago. Well, In
between all these podcasts that are eating up my time, I'm trying to wend my
way through the first volume of the biography of Eleanor Roosevelt and I'm
back in 1919, 1920. Actually I was just reading about racial tensions in
Washington DC in 1917. This is where Donald is taking us back, not 50 years
ago, 90 years ago, to when lynching was legal, when US Naval officers
attacked black citizens and burned their homes, to the Red Scare and Palmer
raids, to the days when Hoover began his list of subversives which included
people dedicated to peace, labor rights, women's rights, and racial justice.
By the way, have you ever read what Henry Adams thought about women and
about his wife's suicide? This is, apparently, the same country it always
was and the same factions are fighting the same battles.
