We were attending a Sunday morning platform address at the Ethical Society
in the 60's and the teenagers had apparently decided to educate us about the
modern world. They came into the auditorium singing wonderful songs that we
loved, songs by Cole Porter, Rogers and Hart, Rogers and Hammerstein,
etcetera, all the wonderful melodies with poetic and romantic lyrics. We sat
back, relaxed, listening to these young voices singing, accompanied by a
piano. Then suddenly the room erupted in very loud sound, blaring sound, and
we were listening to the Beetles. It was an assault on our senses, a shock!
But we began to adjust and the last song was Hey Jude which was wonderful!

Bob,
I had to learn to enjoy the Beetles, believe it or not. But my musical
conditioning had taken place in the late 30's and 40's and into the early
50's. Today I can't imaginehow I resisted some of the great music that has
been created since Glenn Miller.
Imagine, is a Classic. We all ought to listen to it when we are feeling at
the end of our rope. Hope. Imagination. If we do not have hope and our
imagination, how can we create a better world?

Hi Carl,
Your words today brought to mind one of my all-time favorite songs.
Perhaps this song best depicts the world that some of us dream about and
hope for.
Unfortunately, we are a million miles away from that world. See the
song and lyrics pasted below my name.

Imagine
By John Lennon
Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today...
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one
