"Melania and I tested positive for COVID-19. We will begin our quarantine and
recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!"
Sean Conley, Trump's physician, released a statement to reporters confirming
the diagnosis.
"This evening I received confirmation that both President Trump and First Lady
Melania Trump have tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The President and
First Lady are both well at this time, and they plan to remain at home within
the White House during their convalescence," wrote Conley. "The White House
medical team and I will maintain a vigilant watch, and I appreciate the support
provided by some of our our country's greatest medical professionals and
institutions. Rest assured I expect the President to continue carrying out his
duties without disruption while recovering, and I will keep you updated on any
future developments."
Trump contracted the coronavirus after months of downplaying the outbreak and
eschewing masks. Just two days earlier, he mocked former Vice President Joe
Biden at the presidential debate for his diligence in mask-wearing. With a
little over a month left before the Nov. 3 election and voters already casting
early ballots, the development is bound to shakeup the race.
As of Thursday afternoon, 7,213,419 people in the United States have tested
positive for the coronavirus and 206,402 Americans have died of the
coronavirus, according to the Centers for disease Control and Prevention.
Hours before he found out that he had the coronavirus, Trump reportedly assured
guests at a political diner that "the end of the pandemic is in sight."
