I have to admit it, Miriam, I talk the talk, but don't walk the walk
when it comes to football. I had the same struggle many years back,
when I decided that boxing was not a sport. As a young man, I
secretly enjoyed watching someone getting the stuffings knocked out of
them. Then I remember seeing Ezzard Charles at the end of his career.
He had turned from being an average sort of a fellow, into a drooling
fool.
Well, I got past my "enjoyment" of violence in boxing. But football
is not much better. In most sports, the play is on the ball. Only in
American Football is the object the person who has the ball. Even
though Soccer is a fairly rough and tumble sport, it is far better on
the players bodies and brains. There is some sort of a message when a
nation is turned onto violence. It's in our sports, in our leisure
reading, in our video games, and on our streets. So is the sport of
degrading women. We are so far away from treating one another with
respect that we should be examining everything we do.

I think I sort of suspected that, but I meant, I guess, symbolically. There
are a lot of other good reasons for boycotting football as it is currently
played which have to do with the brain injuries sustained by players. It's
sort of the American version of the Romans watching those fights in the
forum between two slaves in which the winner is alive and the loser dies.

I have never paid to see a Sea Hawk football game. Back in the mid 90's,
when games were still played in the King Dome(imploded March 26,
2000) I won two tickets to a game. I gave them to our son James, and his
cousin Sam. The last Mariner game I paid to see was also in the King Dome,
and the Beach Boys provided the entertainment. We did pay to attend Spring
Training games when we were visiting my sister in Arizona.
So my refusal to attend any team whose owners believe in controlling their
worker's lives, will not get any results.
I do watch the Sea Hawks, and a few Mariner's games, but I couldn't name a
single sponsor. I can guess...Toyota!...and maybe Pepsi Cola.
In fact, if everyone "supported" the teams and their sponsors the way Cathy
and I do, there would be a whole lot less broadcasting on TV.
