Last week I posted on Facebook that I was feeling pretty indifferent toward the
Olympics. I’m not the USA, USA type to begin with, and besides that I was kind
of feeling like the media was screaming at me that I *must* care, which is a
huge turn-off for me. Then the other day I started reading a book entitled
Brazil’s Dance with the Devil written by Dave Zirin. That’s when my feelings
evolved from indifference to something resembling horror and perhaps even
revulsion. Esentially, in the name of hosting the Olympics this year and the
World Cup in 2014, the powers that be basically tanked the economy, shredded
the social safety net and basically turned the whole society upside down. But
hey, who really cares about the actual people of the country when there’s money
to be made by the people who really count? It actually puts me in mind of those
municipalities here in America who will let bridges crumble and public
buildings fall apart for supposed lack of funds, but miraculously there’s
plenty of money on hand for building that shiny new sports arena, because hey,
the one the team’s currently playing in is almost, ee gads, 25 years old!
Horror of horrors! Anyway, at this point, if I see one more post about how
great it is that the Olympics opening ceremonies were audio described, I might
throw my keyboard out the window. Color me just plain disgusted.
