In the context in which Mr. Maher used the word, he was not being insulting,
anymore than Samuel Clemens was being when he wrote Huckleberry Finn. He was
using it not in a derogatory way, but to indicate how he was being made to feel
in a historical manner. In this case I believe that he was using the word as it
ought to be used, indicating how used and exploited he was feeling at the time,
and as an extension of his declaration that he felt like a house slave.
