Well you know, it gets much more complicated than that. I listened to Rabbi
Michael Lerner from Tikkun on Flashpoints. He and his synagogue are very
progressive, and he's bright and a psychotherapist in addition to being a
rabbi. I think, although it didn't actually come up, that he supports the
idea of Israel, although not Israel as it is currently functioning. But I'm
not sure. And he made a point about which I've been thinking ever since the
attack took place. Those of us who've been saying that Israel, as a homeland
for Jews is unnecessary at this point in history, are now faced with the
fact that once again, even in a country where Jews appear to have been
integrated and have powerful positions and where the obvious anti-semitism
that I remember from my childhood, appeared to have vanished, Jews have been
murdered because of their Jewishness. And Lerner had statistics about the
rise in anti-semitism in Europe. And we know that our own government has
been supporting nazi elements in Ukraine and that Trump Bannon, and other
White Nationalists are openly using anti-semitic images and language on
social media. Now those of us with Jewish backgrounds who do not support
Israel as a Jewish state, can respond that Palestine should be a
heterogeneous homeland for Jews and Palestinians who have equal rights there
and that stealing land and rights from Palestinians to keep Jews safe has
turned the Middle East into a nightmare. But that is not the response of a
lot of frightened Jews. And I heard, on one of the podcasts some Trump
supporting, Republican, angry, terrified Jews, whose words made my skin
crawl.

Looks like we humans are in for a horrible period of hate and intolerance
