Remember the frog sitting in the pan of water that is slowly coming to
a boil? Well, imagine that we are that frog. For many years we have
been sitting in a pot of water that is slowly heating up. So slow is
the change, that we pay little attention to it. In fact, we pretend
that on good days the water is getting cooler. But cooler or warmer,
there we sit, hoping that things will stay about the same.
Then along comes a new wannabee cook in the kitchen. Slow, steady
cooking is not in his thinking. Fast Food and a quick return is where
his head is at. And so this new wannabee cook reaches over and turns
the heat on high.
Now in my version of this Fairy Tale, the Frog simply jumps out of the
pot, leaving the wannabee cook holding the bag. But there is another
ending to this fantasy. As he turns up the heat, the wannabee cook
slams a lid down over the startled Frog.
Already, in our real Wonderland, Trump is beginning to slam the lid
down. If we don't jump out of the pot quickly, our Goose(Frog) is
cooked.

Sitting here, at 11:0r PM on January 24, 2017, it's hard for me to not feel
like we have now reached the tipping point, and there is no going back. We
have a man in the White House who very clearly has serious mental health
issues. It should be clear to anyone paying the slightest attention that he
has gone completely off the rails, and he is now taking the country with
him. And the Legislative Branch, with their much ballyhooed checks and
balances I heard so many times in November and December would save us from
the worst of his schemes, appear to be nonexistent. The Legislative Branch
has clearly chosen power and party over logic, common sense, even common
decency. Nobody's going to invoke the 25th Amendment. Ther will be no
impeachment. He will be allowed to continue his path of destruction, and
there isn't a bloody thing anyone can do. And if by some miracle some
lawmakers actually grow spines, it will be too late. I really, really
despair when I think about what my 13-year-old daughter's life is going to
be like going forward. And you know what really gets me? Even now, with
everything out in the open for everyone to see, way too many people still
don't care. They just shrug, reach for the TV remote, and look for The
Survivor or the Voice or some other tripe-filled shows. Think the media
equivalent of Valium. I don't have any more idea of what to do than anyone
else. I don't have the strength or energy to take to the streets. I've done
whatever I can with my keyboard and my phone, but that feels like precious
little. I do know one thing, though: For people who truly care, there is no
longer the luxury of staying polite or silent. At this point it feels like
silence is tatamount to complicity, and I for one don't want to be in that
category anymore. Sorry for the rambly musings, I just kind of needed to
vent.
