I don't normally send petitions, because so often it opens the
floodgates to more and more petitions. But this hit a sore spot. I
grew up in Ballard, and believed the Ballard hospital was as fine as
they come.
Since I believe that Women are Human Beings, just like Men(only
prettier) I am outraged by the treatment of that once fine hospital.

That's what I was told when I arrived at the doors of my local
hospital in Ballard, Washington after being drugged and raped in April
of 2014.
After everything I'd been through, I was told my only options were to
either drive myself to a hospital even further away that DID process
them, or pay out of pocket for an ambulance to take me there. I was so
shocked, I just went home. It wasn't until several hours later that I
did go to the other hospital, where they discovered I actually had
internal injuries and finally did the kit.
It was a confusing and frustrating process, but it was only the
beginning. When the prosecutors finally got around to looking at the
case, they decided not to bring charges because of the delay before I
received service and the weakness of the evidence.
I was stunned. I kept asking myself: how do we have a justice system
that demands empirical evidence from survivors of sexual assault and
then denies access to that evidence collection? How could we do this
as a country? The more I thought about it, the madder I got, but
instead of flying into a rage, I got organized. I began reaching out
to everyone I could think of. I called reporters, police leadership,
and elected officials. Senator Patty Murray was one of the first to
provide meaningful help.
She leapt into action, demanding a review of the availability of rape
kits and sexual assault nurse examiners nationwide. We were horrified
by the results. Not only were certified sexual assault nurse examiners
available in only 17% of hospitals, but there were potentially
hundreds of counties where there weren't any at all. Combined with
other flaws in the current system, survivors had to navigate a
veritable maze in order to get the care they needed.
This was a problem that needed fixing, and one that could be fixed.
So I helped Senator Murray write the Survivors Access to Supportive
Care Act. This legislation would help survivors all over the country;
providing an ongoing analysis of the barriers to care; developing
additional trainings; setting a national medical standard of care for
survivors of sexual assault; and requiring hospitals to accurately
provide information about the services available.
In the last few weeks, the bill has been introduced in both the Senate
and the House with bipartisan support. Passing this law would be a
meaningful step towards addressing the problems faced by too many
survivors.

What I, and millions of other survivors, have gone through is terrible
enough. Let's do everything we can to ensure they can access the care
they need.
Nobody should be turned away in their darkest hour. We have to do better.
