I have not read The Green Mile, but I do agree that there are some books
that I remember so well that I would not read them again. By the way,
Stephen King does have a habit of writing really long and to the point
that his editors ask him to cut his manuscripts because they are sure
that people would never buy books as long as they are when he submits
them. After he reached the point that, as he put it, he could publish
his laundry list and it would become a best seller the publishers became
more tolerant of his nearly endless books and one?? in particular was
republished with most of the cuts restored. That was The Stand. I read
the Stand when the shortened version was the only version, but I do
notice that BARD has both versions, so I am continually contemplating
reading the long version to see what I missed. I might also mention that
it was The Stand that broke down my aversion to reading best sellers.
Back when my network library was sending me books on tape based on the
categories I had checked on my original application for talking books
they sent me a copy of The Stand. My first reaction was yuck. It was a
best seller. I do not choose my reading in order to be fashionable and I
even avoid the fashionable so that I won't appear to be trying to be
fashionable. On the other hand, I do like horror literature and I was
curious about Stephen King. I finally decided that as long as I had this
one on hand I would give it a try and no one would ever have to know
that I actually read a best seller as long as I kept quiet about it.
Well, I was very impressed and I went on to seek out Stephen King and
found myself impressed by most of the other writings of his that I read.
He was actually a best seller author who could write well. Now that you
give The Green Mile such high praise my chances of reading that one has
just increased. If you think it is his best it must be pretty good. Now,
I am going to have to admit that my experience with Stephen King has
caused me to allow myself to sample a bit of other best sellers. I don't
think he is quite as good as Stephen King, but if it had not been for my
trying out King I might never have read a book by Dean R. Koontz.

It's one of those subtle signs that I'm getting long in the tooth. I used
to read or listen to information, or read a novel, and never dream of
wasting my time reading or listening to it again...ever! But in recent
years I find myself listening to the same articles or the same speakers,
and actually learning new information...again.
I'm sure that this relaxing of my mental process is not the only
indication of the aging process, but being blind, I never worry about what
would stare back at me from my mirror.
I do chuckle when Cathy and I return home after working with two clients,
and we can barely stagger into our recliners. When we began back in 1995,
we saw two clients in the morning and two clients following lunch. And we
worked five days a week in the field, not just Tuesday, Wednesday and
Thursday, and we wrote our reports in the late evening.
If I kept that sort of schedule today, I'd last about one day...and no
reports would ever be written.
By the way, I read A People's History of the United States, twice.
