16-year-old Palestinian-American Mahmoud Shaalan
Miriam,
Over a month ago, a Palestinian-American boy was shot and killed by Israeli
forces in what seemed to be an extrajudicial execution.
Mahmoud Shaalan was a 16-year-old high school student who was born and
raised in Florida and hoped to study medicine. He was shot by Israeli
soldiers at a checkpoint near the Beit El settlement in the occupied
Palestinian territory, three days after traveling there from the U.S.
Soldiers stripped Mahmoud's body, left him bleeding on the road for more
than two hours, and prevented a Palestinian ambulance from taking him to a
hospital.
The circumstances surrounding Mahmoud's death have remained ambiguous, and
his story is just one of many examples of Palestinians killed by the Israeli
military under similar questionable circumstances in recent months.
To date, the U.S. government has not condemned the killing nor has it even
called for an investigation.

Mahmoud's killing should be investigated, both because he deserves the same
protections as any other U.S. citizen, and because he was killed with
weapons subsidized by U.S. tax dollars.
Numerous laws and regulations, including the Leahy Law, prohibit the U.S.
from providing military aid to foreign security units involved with gross
violations of human rights. Although dozens of apparent extrajudicial
killings and other human rights violations have been well documented, Israel
continues to receive billions of dollars in U.S. security assistance every
year.
This cannot continue.
