Dear Theresa May,
The fate of free speech and free press protector Julian Assange is in the hands
of the United Kingdom. As prime minister, we appeal to you to do everything in
your power--make a public statement, use your position and influence--to appeal
to the British courts not to extradite Assange to the U.S. and instead release
him immediately.
The relentless attacks on Julian Assange, Chelsea Manning and others threaten
the future of free press, which is the bulwark of democracy. Thanks to Julian
Assange:
* WikiLeaks documents have informed the public about U.S. war crimes in
Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen, and more.
* WikiLeaks documents have released tens of thousands of articles and
academic papers.
* WikiLeaks releases have been used in numerous court cases where human
rights defenders have been on trial.
* Rather than being a criminal, Assange is a truth teller, bringing to
light war crimes and human rights abuses that must be exposed and abolished.
Assange’s health is in severe decline as a result of his years confined inside
the Ecuadorian embassy. He must be given immediate medical treatment and
freedom to care for himself and continue his important work.
