No difference who took the white house? What a load of hooey. It made a wealth
of difference. Even since the beginning of the year I have seen substantial
changes in the way government conducts its business, even on my job, as low as
it may be.

Points taken, Miriam.
Of course you're right in inferring that what hangs in the balance will
determine how we behave. All you and I gained by voting for Jill Stein was the
privilege of saying that we voted for Jill Stein. But if I lived in one of the
swing states, that fact alone would impact my thinking. Still, I privately
believe that in those critical states there was serious tampering with the
ballot boxes, and Donald Trump did not need the Russians to win. Like you, I
am troubled by the casual comments that it made no difference who took the
White House.
Even though I have said that I have no dog in this fight, meaning that none of
the two finalists had any of my interests on their agendas, I could tell the
differences. Cripes! I tooted my horn for Bernie, even considering his
support of Israel and of the munitions manufacturing corporations.
He, if congress could be budged to support him in the slightest, would have
been far better than Clinton. And after seeing the "Parade of the
Billionaires" escorted by Donald Trump into Washington D C, how could anyone
say there was no difference between them?
But on the broader scale, the ship of fools is sinking, and we working class
folk are without a paddle. We can splash about but in the end we will go down
with all hands on board.
Today is our Jefferson County Council of the Blind annual picnic.
Cathy is preparing her famous, always in demand, potato salad. I always am
tempted to put an "e" at the end of potato, in honer of Knute...I think it was
Knute...they all begin to look alike.
The weather is headed for the low 80's with blue skies. It's good to gather
with old friends, especially since most in our group understand the threat we
are under.
And now, just to round off my Down Day, I will go and watch a taped edition of
Alone...but don't tell on me.

Carl,
Your state of Washington wasn't a swing state, nor was my state of New York.
So I voted for Sanders in the primary, and for Stein in the
Presidential election. My vote for Stein was a purely selfish vote. I
could reject Hillary because I knew that she would carry New York,
regardless of what I did. However, I would not have had the luxury of
doing that if I lived in one of the swing states like Michigan, where
Joe lives. That is because that vote for President had little to do
with who the nominee was and a lot to do with the way in which
government functioning would be influenced with a Republican
President. Most important, are the supreme court nominees, and the
nominees to lesser courts. And it is already very evident how the
laws are interpreted when the Right Wing has a majority on the supreme
court. The lives of real people are negatively affected. There is also
a tone that is set for the country, a set of values that are
emphasized to the public. And those values, voiced by a President and
then magnified by other governmental officials and the media,
influences the behavior of our citizenry. There's no denying that the
powerful elites rule the world. However, there is very definitely a
difference in how the lives of average people are affected by
Democrats and Republicans. Like you, I also want fundamental changes.
Like Chris Hedges, I believe that our society is corrupted and dying.
But I want to hold onto and augment anything left that is positive and
helpful. I've heard Julian Assange and other people say that there was
absolutely no difference in voting for Hillary Clinton or Donald
Trump. I think that is an insane statement on its face and besides, it really
isn't the point. If I believed that my vote for Jill Stein would have
contributed in any way to Trump's winning the Presidency, my guilt would have
been overwhelming.

Miriam,
Just goes to show you. All it takes to set me off is a quick glance
at last years news.
I guess that sometimes my rants give the impression that I'm a purest,
but actually I think I understand enough about human nature to know
that none of us has the perfect answer. Regardless of my belief that
trying to turn the corrupt Democratic Party into a People's Party is
an exercise in futility, I won't discourage those who believe it can
be done. I presented my reasons for voting for Sanders in the
primary, and for Stein in the general election, but I never asked
anyone to refuse to vote for Clinton. As it all turned out, it made
little difference. But friends told me that a vote for Sanders or
Stein was a vote for Trump. Others told me that a vote for Stein was
simply throwing my vote away. In both cases my friends were
subconsciously telling me that I did not have the good sense, like
they had, to grasp the real situation. In my mind, I was voting for
whom I saw as my best option. The Media makes elections out to be
contests between individuals, when it should be discussing the Platforms
behind each candidate...or upon which each candidate stands.
My mother-in-law looked at the candidates for president a number of
elections back, and said she was voting for Bob Dole, "Because I like
his looks". In the time I've been on this list, I've changed several
of my basic positions. This is due to the constant presentation of
articles and information, and logical discussion and the raising of
questions. We need, somehow, to return to a slower pace that allows
us the time for such things as Town Meetings, gatherings in our local
precinct, real in depth reporting in our papers and on TV and radio.
And to reach such a change in our priorities, we need support from all
of the splinter groups on the Left.

That happened last summer and the petitions were related to the
platform of the Democratic Party. The big debate on the left has to
do with whether, given the political and economic structure of the
US, it's wiser to take over an already existing party structure or
whether it's better to start from scratch. People on the left tend to
be purists. They argue over every point. Some people think the Green
Party is too Bourgeois. Some argue over which socialist party is
politically correct. While everyone splits into their little
politically correct purist sects, carefully picking their allies and
enemies, the wealthy pragmatists win the war. Evangelicals ally with
a sinner and thief in order to have the power of The White House.
Republicans who cautiously separated themselves from Trum to begin
with, happily join him. The New York Times hires a climate denier as
a columnist.
Even Amy Goodman has Syrian rebels allied with Al Qaeda on her program.

Considering that we people on the Left have no political party
representing us in congress, doesn't it seem more practical to take
those signatures and begin a Peoples Party, rather than bothering the
Democratic Party, and distracting them from their efforts to "Out
Kiss" the Republicans in smooching the backsides of Corporate America?
