Subject: DHS pushing ahead with deportation of Ann Arbor mom who's been here 20
years
One of the most significant non-rhetorical changes in immigration policy under
Trump has been the targeting of people who have been in the United States for
decades, with no criminal record. Obama's record on immigration wasn't great,
but, more or less, he left those kinds of people alone.
Trump famously said he'd only be rounding up "bad hombres," and it's quite
possible that in his mind that's what he thinks he's doing. (It's impossible to
know what Trump actually knows.) But in reality, an unleashed immigration
enforcement agency is rounding up as many longtime residents as they can get
their hands on. It's an expansive use of federal money and power to go after
the most vulnerable people in the community. It is as senseless as it is cruel.
You're telling me our society can't figure out a way for the law-abiding
parents of American children to stay here legally?
So we hired Maryam Saleh, The Intercept's newest fellow, to cover the stories
of longtime residents getting caught up in the reality of Trump's rhetoric.
Here's her first piece, about an Ann Arbor mom who has just days to go before
she is deported.
You can follow Maryam on Twitter, or tweet her story, here.
Or share it on Facebook here.
Her full story is here.
On Capitol Hill, once Republicans finally admit they're done trying to repeal
the ACA, they're going to move to tax cuts. Here's a primer from Dave Dayen on
how that's going. My take: McConnell and Ryan are fooling themselves. On almost
every issue other than cutting regulations, Republicans don't have a governing
majority. So these attempts to do everything with only Republican votes are
doomed to fail and fail and fail. Only when they admit their weak position and
start negotiating with Democrats will they have a chance of getting anything
done.
And if you don't already listen to Jeremy Scahill's podcast Intercepted, I
highly recommend it. This week he talks to famed historian Alfred McCoy, one of
my heroes, about his new book on the decline of American Empire. Here's a taste
of McCoy's vision:
"For the majority of Americans, the 2020s will likely be remembered as a
demoralizing decade of rising prices, stagnant wages, and fading international
competitiveness. After years of swelling deficits fed by incessant warfare in
distant lands, in 2030 the U.S. dollar eventually loses its special status as
the world’s dominant reserve currency.
Suddenly, there are punitive price increases for American imports ranging from
clothing to computers. And the costs for all overseas activity surges as well,
making travel for both tourists and troops prohibitive. Unable to pay for
swelling deficits by selling now-devalued Treasury notes abroad, Washington is
finally forced to slash its bloated military budget. Under pressure at home and
abroad, its forces begin to pull back from hundreds of overseas bases to a
continental perimeter. Such a desperate move, however, comes too late."
(The beginning of the end, he says, was the Iraq war. I think that's right.)

The Intercept, and I send this several times a week. If you see an ad here,
it's there because sending mass emails turns out to be really expensive. I'm
not making any money off of it; it goes to the email service provider and just
defrays the cost a bit. If you want to contribute directly to help keep the
thing running, you can do so here, though be warned a donation comes with no
tote bags or extra premium content or anything. Or you can buy a copy of Out of
the Ooze: The Story of Dr. Tom Price, the first book put out by Strong Arm
Press, a small progressive publishing house I cofounded.
