Miriam --
While the coronavirus stimulus relief package makes its way through Congress,
it’s overwhelming to keep track of all that’s happening.
As of right now, both the Democrats and Republicans have varying priorities --
and we wanted to run down the good and bad aspects of this current relief
package, starting with the good.
What’s in the bill:
* Direct and immediate cash payments to working Americans
* Expanded unemployment insurance and boosted benefits by $600 a week
* Hundreds of billions in funding for hospitals and the healthcare system
* $150 billion to state and local governments
Overall, the bill provides substantial aid to small businesses, education,
transit funding, and many other public services -- but there are many flaws in
the package, including a nearly $500 billion corporate bailout without
requirements to keep workers employed. There are so many crucial measures that
this bill lacks.
What isn’t in the bill:
* Expansion of paid sick and family medical leave
* Expansion of Social Security benefits
* Student debt forgiveness
* Guarantee of free diagnosis and care for treatment for anyone impacted
As Congress debates the measures of this bill, millions of Americans are
already in need -- and can’t afford to wait for them to come to a decision.
Below are some resources with information on how to apply and receive aid
during this pandemic:
