Hey Lewis Wallach!
Welcome to the Blind Chess list!
Your suggestion may be useable, but it would be very difficult to maintain. The
order of the list
would be constantly changing and I don't know of a sort order that you
describe, so it would would
have to be maintained manually, what a Knightmare!

Richard and all,
Does this make any sense.
I've nerver done this before so forgive me if it's really foolish. What if the
best rated player is
placed smack in the middle of the list. Then the next best rated goes above
that position and the
third best rated goes below that middle position. You then keep alternating the
next lower rated
player in line in the next position on each side of the middle. Can this
possibly work?

Eg.
1 960
2 1090
3 1150
4 1210
5 1480
6 1200
7 1100
8 1000
9 900
