Well technically White always makes the first move, but in a theme tournament the first few moves are specified. Therefore White has already made at least one move and you can think of it as picking up the game in progress after some Grand Master starts it for you. In this particular tournament the two players always pick up the game at a Black move. I don't understand what "black goes first" means. Is that when the variation/opening changes? # Each of the three specified opening moves sequences end in a White move so Black is the first one to actually make amove in all the games. Question: Does this mean that after all the years many of us have been playing chess, Black actually makes the first move? I had been taught that White makes the first move.
