Jim,

Personal opinion: The best way I can think of would be to replay the game of a chess master with commentary, and follow along, think as he/she does and immagine yourself playing the game. Richard posted a game recently with step-by-step commentary, and that would be a great start.

Another good way: Pick one of your own games, especially one you lost, and replay that to try to figure out where you went wrong, what youc ould have done better, etc.

A third try: play a game against the computer.
