Chess Article #64:
Top Ten Principles for Beginners and Novices

Chess Opening Strategy - Top Ten Principles

#1 - Develop pieces towards the center, to safe and useful squares.

#2 - Control the center by occupying it with pawns and attacking it
with pieces.

#3 - Protect the king by castling early, usually on the kingside.

#4 - Develop pieces with a threat, or in defense of a threat.

#5 - Make as few pawn moves as possible, and make pawn moves that
further the development of pieces.

#6 - Move each piece only once, unless you must do otherwise.

#7 - Dont bring the Queen out early.

#8 - Develop minor pieces first usually knights before bishops.

#9 - Connect the rooks and bring them to open files.

#10 - The best first move is a center pawn move.

Chess Middlegame Strategy - Top Ten Principles

#1 - Centralize and coordinate your pieces. This is when tactical
opportunities will begin to materialize.

#2 - When your position is cramped, exchange pieces.

#3 - When ahead in material, exchange pieces, not pawns.

#4 - When you have a bad or inactive piece, exchange it.

#5 - Don't launch an attack on the flank until the center is
secure.

#6 - When the opponents king is exposed, look for tactics and
combinations.

#7 - When the opponents development is poor, look for tactics and
combinations.

#8 - Attack your opponents weak and backwards pawns.

#9 - Occupy your opponents weak squares. Knights are particularly
good at establishing outposts.

#10 - Dont make unnecessary pawn moves in front of your king. This
weakens your position.
Chess Endgame Strategy - Top Ten Principles

#1 - Activate your King. It is an invaluable attacking piece in the
endgame.

#2 - Create a passed Pawn, and escort it to promotion.

#3 - When ahead in material, exchange pieces but not Pawns.

#4 - Place pawns on opposite coloured squares as your Bishop.

#5 - Put rooks behind friendly and enemy passed Pawns.

#6 - Use Rooks to cut off the enemy King.

#7 - When you have the advantage, dont waste time promoting
multiple new Queens. Press your advantage for checkmate instead.

#8 - Activate and coordinate your pieces before making premature
Pawn thrusts.

#9 - Develop threats and passed Pawns on both wings.

#10 - When you have the advantage, simplify to a winning endgame.
