Last Friday I got interviewed to work with a Pyrenees. First thing was while
talking to the potential client she, the Pyrenees played with my guide dog. I
checked for behavioral problems such as aggression in different situations.
Naturally she needed to get used to me as well. I start work next Friday on
recall. I tested her on that when in our backyard she was fine. Well, as fine
as she could be. However, on an off leash trail with all the other interesting
smells is completely different. As I tell people, "Your dog could do fine in
the basic commands at home but take them out of that environment and it is a
different matter. I once worked with a dog on stopping at curbs. In our
neighborhood she was fine, taking her somewhere else like a parking lot and she
forgot. This is of course taking into consideration that dogs like people have
memory lapses.
