I did some research. The copyright law section 107 allows for Fair Use and I've put it below. It says there is no set number of lines, although for some reason 8 - 10 sticks in my brain--but obviously for no reason. I have quoted, using quotation marks, sections of reviews or annotations that I found in my library online catalog and on the Amazon site, though not long sections. The plot summaries by the readers on the amazone site I'm sure are not copyrighted--unless the writer specifically says so. The reviews from Library Journal and Publishers' Weekly are, but Fair Use would allow you to quote from them, I think, given the four criteria listed in Section 107, posted below. You can also quote from the book cover flap, which I include in the book file when I upload it. Cindy "Section 107 contains a list of the various purposes for which the reproduction of a particular work may be considered ?fair,? such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Section 107 also sets out four factors to be considered in determining whether or not a particular use is fair: 1. the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes; 2.the nature of the copyrighted work; 3. the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and 4. the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work. The distinction between ?fair use? and infringement may be unclear and not easily defined. There is no specific number of words, lines, or notes that may safely be taken without permission. Acknowledging the source of the copyrighted material does not substitute for obtaining permission. - ____________________________________________________________________________________Get the free Yahoo! toolbar and rest assured with the added security of spyware protection. http://new.toolbar.yahoo.com/toolbar/features/norton/index.php To unsubscribe from this list send a blank Email to bksvol-discuss-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx put the word 'unsubscribe' by itself in the subject line.
