Hi Cindy,

Volunteers who scan for Bookshare make sure to check “United States” under
country restrictions. This means that only users from the US can read them.
This is due to US copyright law. This is also why only US residents can
volunteer to proof or scan books. Any book scanned by a Bookshare volunteer,
regardless of where it was published, can be made available to US Bookshare
members.

Publishers do not operate under the same amendment to the copyright law that we
do, thus, they have different restrictions.

Hope that clarifies things.

Best,

Madeleine

I'm confused; how does that work?
And if a U.S. person buys and book and scans it ... there are citizens of
other countries who are bookshare members, are there not? so if the book is in
the collection, does a person who tries to download it get a menage you can't
have access to this book? I understand that if the publisher donates it with a
restriction, it should be restricted by bookshare to a U.S. citizen, but if
such a person is able to buy it and scans it and it is then proofed, etc., why
should book-share take it upon itself to deny it to other citizens; that
doesn't seem fair;
 Cindy
P.S. How would we know before scanning a book , if we bought a book, that
it's not to be available to U.S. citizens? ( I suppose it says somewhere in the
front pages

Hi everyone,

One of my coworkers in the Collection Development department just brought it to
my attention that we’re actually working on that book (On Being Mortal) right
now because it’s a New York Times bestseller.

Please don’t scan it!

Judy did bring up a great point: make sure to check which countries can read
the book when you search the collection and think you’ve found the book already
in our collection. We sometimes get books from publishers with specific rights
for countries other than the US.

Best,

Madeleine

Unless I'm missing something, this book, "Being Mortal" by Gawande, is not
available to United States members, even though it is in the Bookshare
collection.

Am I looking at the wrong title? If so, can someone point me to the right one?

Thanks.

You are so welcome, Sister Dolores.
I know what it can be to scan and submit a book and then to find out it is
already there!
This is a very good book, by the way. I heard a really fascinating interview
with the author on the Diane Rehm show on NPR a while back.
