Thanks. Are you using Openbook as well? I'm pretty sure the Pearl is the
source of the problem, but I'm wondering if Kurzweil has better results than
Openbook.

Nothing beats the OpticBook 3600, in my experience.  I work with many very
old books with fragile spines and they all come through without a problem!
