I encountered something like this a while back in a book I was
proofing. There was this strange character that seemed to separate
words, and my screen reader would not read it out when I used the left
and right arrow keys on the keyboard. The screen reader I was using
was NVDA, but in the case of your message, NVDA read it as a "soft
hyphen." I'm not sure if I was coming across that same character, but
I could tell something odd was there when it would say one word as if
it was two, like there was a space in between them. That space was
that weird character, might have been the soft hyphen, I don't know.
But when I used my Braille display, the letter after it looked
strange; I deleted the character the screen reader wasn't saying, and
then the word was normal both in speech and Braille. As for why it
isn't spoken, this is just a guess, but it might also have to do with
punctuation settings. Or it might be a difference in how the same
screen reader handles Word and how it reads a Web page, as I'm getting
my email through a Web interface. I would say that when you come
across this character, use the left and right arrow keys on the word
that has it, and when JAWS doesn't speak the character, just press
delete on that and the word should be back to normal. Anybody else
have other ideas here?

I'm reading a book someone scanned for one of my classes, and there's this
character that keeps showing up that splits words. However, JAWS isn't
reading it out loud, so I am not really sure what it is. Do any of you
lovely knowledgeable people know what it could be? I have copied and pasted
