I just have to agree with Evan here. I never do globals on things like that. I do replace on strings like corn when I am doing it with OpenBook, but I have it ask me about each occurrence of a string after I've seen it several times. I would do that in .rtf, too, but I tend to mostly read the book. Most of the Mdash I've seen have been legit. Cindy Lou Ray. Each day is a new adventure. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Evan Reese" <mentat1@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Friday, September 14, 2007 8:53 PM Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: one more question on symbols Those particular characters could well be correct, and intended in the book. I wouldn't replace them with nothing unless I was very sure they were not intended. You should find the context in which they occur and try to determine whether they are just junk, or are there because the author meant for them to be there. Em dashes are used often in many books. I am less sure of the usage of the en dash, but it, too, is a legitimate character. Be careful about removing them. You certainly don't want to put them in a global replace field and replace them with nothing all through the book! It may be safer to do that with many of the characters in the list that was just sent up, although I would still look at the context. You never know for sure what might be in any given book for perfectly legitimate reasons. For instance, if I had replaced the Registered mark, ASCII 174, in the last book I scanned, it would have created a mess. I also scanned one book with quite a few bullets in it. Global find and replace should be used with great caution. All of which means ultimately, inefficient as it is, there's no real substitute for reading the book. That's the best way of ensuring that you know what is intentional and what is junk. Good luck.
