Dear Grand Cindy,There is a way to indicate italics in braille. There's a sign before the first word in a series of italicized words and a sign to let the reader know they are reading the last word in the series. Or a single word can be marked with an italics sign.
The braille books we get from NLS have all of the italicized words. Or, when we write braille for ourselves we can indicate italics. They don't show up in braille Bookshare books because the Bookshare tools aren't able to recognize them and insert the appropriate braille symbols. Someday Bookshare will have a more sophisticated braille translation program, and then braille readers will see anything offset with italics. That's why I am careful to preserve them when I can, hoping when the tools catch up, they can draw from the book files they have saved and present them with all of the symbols and formatting they can't translate at this time. The way Bookshare continues to upgrade, I'm certain the italics and other braille symbols which don't appear now, will be incorporated in the tools soon.

Oh, it's too bad that neither Braille nor Daisy emphasizes italics. I figured Braille probably wouldn't, but I thought a reader--I assumed, perhaps erroneously, that Daisy is auditory--would. Usually an emphasis is "in" a sentence even if the word isn't italicized. When I'm reading and I hear, mentally, the emphasis I check the print book to see--sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't. In this particular book there are more than usual because of the personality of the person "speaking." Ah, well...I'll put them in for nonblind members. And as Evan says, maybe eventually other boookshare technology will be able to translate them. Something for young engineers like Jake to work on. smile G.Cindy --- Cindy Ray <cindyray@xxxxxxxxx> wrote:No, they don't put the emphasis in (Daisy doesn't) if you are reading it with speech, or at least the Victor Stream doesn't. That's a problem, too, because I'm not sure that I would mostly catch italicized words when validating. Cindy Lou Ray Cindy Lou Ray. But that also should be redone--Did you mention the title? Maybe, as I think you said, that was done a long time ago, before everyone becamse more careful. I just validated a near-perfect scan. Only one word was incorrect--denning instead of defined. And in that particular case, unlike the rabies and emeralds, it would have been impossible from the context to tell what the word should have been. Other than that one word, there were a few extraneous letters at the very end of pages--not more than 5 or 6--but they would be annoying to a reader, I think. But the book would rate an Excellent, very few errors, even if I hadn't read and validated it. I just made an Excellent book even more Excellent. Now I've started a book that, so far, has tons of italicized words. They didn't scan as italicized, but they are necessary to get the flavor of the personality of the narrator and story. I assume that Daisy and perhaps also Braille read italicized words with the emphasis the author wants. G.Cindy --- Cindy Ray <cindyray@xxxxxxxxx> wrote: > Actually, I'm not validating it.
