Chris, you explained, "So, I'm basically a geek who has grown too old to be chic. I read, I do

research, I write programs, I try to help out here and there if I can offer
value."

And it sounds like a good life to me!

I never did a dissertation. In 1997, I started graduate school at Harvard
University (it was the closest college to my house) in English/Creative
Writing. Almost exactly one year later, Ted Henter offered me the job
running the JAWS and HJ software team and I jumped from academia to software
engineering where I had spent most of my career.

I didn't think that blind people could work on software projects back then.
My vision had just gotten bad enough so I made my own screen reader for
Macintosh and followed my way into writing and literature - loves I've
always had along with technology.

I do love William Faulkner's work but I really love lots of other authors as
well. I try to read one educational and one purely for the love of
literature per week. Of course, the range of topics in my "educational"
list is really broad and, to an outsider, might even appear somewhat random
with a bias toward science.

So, I'm basically a geek who has grown too old to be chic. I read, I do
research, I write programs, I try to help out here and there if I can offer
value.

Before responding to Chris's post I thought I'd read further. I was sure
you'd mention that you're a big Faulkner fan so I wasn't going to--but you
didn't mention that. Did you do your dissertation on him?
