Hi Pavi.

In your previous message you said "Also -- if there are other areas where you think we need to formulate a standardized approach please let me know -- and we can start working on them. (These sort of things are really helpful to start clarifying as we work on making the scanning and validation manual more comprehensive and complete)."

I think that there needs to be a method of lawfully sharing a book between a scanner and a validator.

I have brought this up for discussion so many times that my fellow volunteers know what I'm going to say before I say it. Most of them, I suspect, think I should just keep quiet about it.

Earlier today someone requested that a book (or books) be converted from .rtf so they could work on them.

They can't legally send me the book to convert (we'll both be banned from bookshare and sent to the nether world) if we share a book.

It would take me about two minutes to do the conversion with the software I have here. But if I get the book from step one, I can either release it or upload it. If I release it, then the original copy of the book is now available (still unconverted). Or I can upload it, in which case it will be placed in the general library unvalidated. ...

We share portions of a book all the time: requests for someone else to handle pictures, diagrams and charts are quite frequent on this list. What's the difference between a portion of a book and the entire book?

Furthermore, if a scanner and validator worked together on some books it would promote a teamwork approach to preparing a book for the general public. I personally believe that if bookshare promoted teamwork instead of preventing it, our library would increase with a higher quality book than it now is.

Okay, I've had my say, and I'll not bring it up again. Unless someone innocently asks for suggestions.

Bob

Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Dealing with Photos & Captions

Hi All,

In a recent exchange with a volunteer, the question of how to deal with photos and captions came up. I talked to Carrie to see if she had a particular approach that we could then try and standardize across the board (with such things there tend to be no right or wrong methods but it would be great to slowly but surely try to develop a uniformity of approach)

Here are the guidelines Carrie put forward for such cases:

* Remove the photos

* Retain the caption text.

* Separate it from the rest of the text with angle brackets <>

* Precede the text of the caption with "Photo caption:" to make it clear what the text is.

Let me know if there are any questions regarding this.

Also -- if there are other areas where you think we need to formulate a standardized approach please let me know -- and we can start working on them. (These sort of things are really helpful to start clarifying as we work on making the scanning and validation manual more comprehensive and complete).

All good things,
