Brian I wondered much the same thing prior to buying K1000 myself last year at this time. Here is what you need to keep in mind. Yes, you can scan using OmniPage. But what K1000 is, when it comes to scanning and recognizing, is a program using not one, but 2, scanning engines which can be easily fine tuned by the blind user. Not only can you scan and recognize in K1000, but you can also edit your work, read books, retrieve books from BookShare and NLS, plus, and this is invaluable, have the program automatically look at what you are trying to scan and come up with what it believes are the optimal settings. This point sold me on K1000. More over, in editing your work, K100 offers a ranked spelling option which tells you what may be misspelled based on frequency of occurrence. Hence, by verifying the spelling of the most common misspellings reported, you can quickly improve the quality of your book. K1000 is more than a scan/recognize package plus book editor/reader. It offers calculator functions, a money identifier, an interface for accessing several encyclopedias, retrieving books from Web Braille and Bookshare, NLS web Braille magazines, and a dictionary/thesaurus. Both K1000 and Open Book offer 30 day trial versions of their software. I'd test them out to see whether the all-in-one seamless integrration approach works for you, and whether the bells and whistles and conveniences are worth the extra cost. So comparing OmniPage with K1000 or Open book isn't like comparing apples and oranges. The latter 2 programs are value-added packages making them far more than a mere piece of scanning software.
