I think the general consensus is that if they’re in the print book, then they
should be left in.

Vanessa., the asterisks are not at the end of a chapter but are at the end of
the page. In one case next page does start with a new chapter; on the page
that caused me to write, the top of the next page (i.e., under the page number
and heading is simply a sentence that continues the paragraph There is no
change of subject or anything. I suspect the asterisks are merely an
indication to the printer that the page (and text on the page) ends. There are
no asterisks at the end of any chapter (I went back and forward in the book to
check.
So -- should I put the asterisks in?

Hi Cindy and All,
Yes, you should add in the asterisks at the end of the chapter.
As much as possible, we are supposed to closely follow the printed book and
only change things to make the book more accessible. Leaving in the asterisks,
or in this case adding them in because they did not scan would be following the
original intention of the author or publisher for the book and would not be
considered a change to the book. This is different from adding in asterisks,
not in the printed book, to indicate a scene change which is something
proofreaders do to help with accessibility. As other have indicated, it is
redundant to add asterisks at the end of the chapter when they are not in the
printed book, which is why we ask proofreaders not to make this change.
I also agree with Lori, please include a note about the asterisks in the
comments when you check in the book. This will help ensure that other people
know that the asterisks were part of the printed book.
Thanks for checking!

Subject: assterisks at the bttom of a page n a print book
The print copy of a book I'm proofing has 3 asterisks at the bottom of the
page; the next page begins with a new chapter and chapter title. The
asterisks didn't scan; should put in the asterisks? There's nothing after
them except the manual page break I'll put in. We're told not to put asterisks
before or after chapter titles; when I do a final pagination check, must I put
in asterisks where I haven't?
I asked on the list and the consensus seems to be tha I should pu them in
the file if they are in the print book. I think we'd all appreciate input from
you.
Thanks
Cindy
