I second your grumble, and for me it applies to any book with lots of
misspelled words. As a scanner, I feel sorry for proofreaders if I miss
anything.

This isn't a request for help. It's just a grumble. Someone in my
neighborhood went to one of those friends of libraries book sales and
came back with several really big boxes of very cheap books. I was
allowed to go through them and pick out books for scanning. Bookshare
already had most of them, but I was able to find enough books that
Bookshare does not have to keep me busy for quite a while. I don't know
why, but there seems to be a preponderance of westerns among them. I am
not a big western fan, but I don't exactly loathe them either, so I can
scan them. There is something about them that is beginning to make me
loathe them a little bit though. These western authors seem to think
that they have to deliberately misspell words to make their characters
sound like cowboys or gunslingers. It seems to me like it would be
sufficient to just misspell an occasional word or to add phrases like,
he said in his cowboy drawl. That would get the idea across and it
wouldn't be so intrusive. But, no, every time there is any dialog in any
of these books each sentence has to be full of deliberate misspellings.
That really slows things down when one is preparing a book for
Bookshare. I have to figure out which words are scanning errors and
which ones are deliberate misspellings. Well, I just started scanning a
western that is even worse than they usually are. It is told in the
first person and even when there is no dialog the narrative is in the
colloquial English of the main character. The grammar is extremely
colloquial, but that doesn't really slow me down. It is those deliberate
misspellings that drive me wacky. I just scanned two pages and it took
about twenty-five minutes. Scanning them and reading them probably took
less than ten minutes. The rest of the time was eaten up with the spell
check. Good grief! It looks like this would be so hard on the author
himself that he would want to tone down the colloquialisms. Oh well.
