I finished validating and uploaded Terrorist, by John Updike. It was a near-perfect scan by Jill. The main things that needed fixing were, as Jill suspected, the foreign words, not all of which scanned correctly; I could correct the letters on the Arabic but not all the accents, i.e., a straight line belongs above the a in some words, and a dot below the h and the s and the t in some words. I believe Kelly with a y mentioned a while ago that she validated one of Jill's scans and found the same excellence. The book is rated Adult because of obscenities, profanity, coarse sex language. This book has a little bit of everything?a wonderful minister's sermon; a few pages of American revolutionary history; a lot of political and social commentary, all blended into the story of the creation of a suicidal teenage American-Muslim terrorist. I don't think I've seen in any book written in this century as many *very* long sentences as well as similes and metaphors that seemed to me to be like the funny ones students write. In a way it distracted from the story because I was so aware of what I considered not-so-good writing--but who am I to criticize John Updike, winner of so many literary awards, including the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, and more.
