I think that the parents should help their kids understand what the words
mean. A youth pastor at my old evangelical Episcopal church deliberately
took the teenagers in his group to R rated movies and then discussed the
content with them. He is extremely conservative in his theology but felt
that if the kids are going to learn correct moral values someone better
teach it to them. This is the same situation happening with the book. Kids
are going to hear these words, anyway, and parents who think that they can
shield their kids, are not facing reality. However, I think that kids might
become distressed by reading a book like I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings or
Beloved but I think that the book about Lucky is probably harmless.
Huckleberry Finn was banned for a while because of the N word but it was a
great book and the author used the word as a way to discuss prejudice.

Now I am curious about the book.

It's a controversial book because of the word
"scrotum" hat appears on the first page. Lucky
overhears a character saying that a rattlesnake bit
his dog on the scrotum. Lucky has no idea what that
is; I'm not sure if she goes to look it up or not.
Many parents and some elementary school librarians,
and some children's librarians in public libraries,
refuse to stock the book because they think that word
makes it inappropriate for children; I think it's
recommended for grades 3 - 5.

Although I'm generally against censorship, I can maybe
understand the elementary school librarians,
especially if the parents object, but I thought public
librarians were more liberal than that--against all
forms of censorship. It seems to me that if parents
don't want their young children to know that much
about the anatomy yet, it's up to them to go to the
library and help their children to choose the books
they want them to read, not up to the librarians to
decide what they're going to have in the library.
