"The Deadly Side of the Square" by Lee Jordan
Description: In a seedy Pimlico square, some of the last survivors of a group
of wartime refugees are dying mysteriously. Coincidence? Or is there a sinister
reason? Several of the refugees flee to safer parts of London, but one--Sophie
Mendel--has occupied her basement flat for forty years and is determined not to
be forced out. Now, alone in a sparsely occupied house, she is a target for
murder, but the police dismiss her fears as the product of an overwrought
imagination. Only when another resident of the house dies does Sophie find an
ally. The dead man's son, an American named Bill Seago, begins to investigate.
When Bill unearths a terrible secret about the house, even Sophie's doctor,
Maggie, is convinced that there is evil afoot. Brought together through their
efforts to help Sophie, Bill and Maggie fall in love. But neither of them can
protect Sophie through all the long hours in which the killer may strike.
Although she is nearly blind, Sophie must find a way to battle the terror in
the empty house herself. Yet Sophie knows the house better than anyone. She
knows it in daylight and in the dark. Whoever is trying to force her out will
soon find cause to beware!
Comments: I have made a "List of Unusual Words" that I will e-mail to the
proofreader. All page numbers, pages, and chapter headings have been counted
and formatted. Spell Check has been run and all indicated words were checked
against the print book. Write to mmbeagle@xxxxxxxxx with any questions.
