I will look into that, but that is what I mean by pricy. The one I have had for ten or more years that just stopped working cost less than a hundred dollars and while I was looking for another one I came across another HP model for eighty something dollars. But I will look this one up and consider it. Right now my snail mail is piling up because I can't read it. I expect that most of it is junk mail, but I have to scan all my mail anyway just in case I get something important.

How're we gonna explain that to the space people? How are we gonna let them know that our ambassador was only late for the meeting because his breakfast was cold and he had to spend half an hour punching his wife around the kitchen? What are they gonna think when they find out that it's just a local custom that over 80 million women in the Third World have had their clitorises forcibly removed in order to reduce their sexual pleasures so they won't cheat on their husbands? Can't you just sense how eager the rest of the universe is for us to show up? Can't you see them out there?” ― George Carlin

Roger,

Plustek's Opticbook is the name of several scanners. The only thing you have to
do with a new one is unlock the scan head underneath the unit, plug it into the
computer via USB and plug it into the wall.

Opticbook has the advantage that you load books from the front rather than from
the sides as was customary with older scanners.

Opticbook makes several models.  I have the 4800 but there are others.  The
4800 was about $700 but I know they have a model for about $300 or $400 (that's
a guess from past checking).

Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Scanner Shopping

I think my scanner bit the dust. At least I can't seem to get the on/off button
to work and it is stuck in the off position now. It is a HP Deskjet 3050A J611
series . It was a number of years ago that I bought it - maybe as far back as
ten years or more - so it is about time it died. I am not good with computers,
computer accessories or any kind of electronics. So I thought that if I bought
a new one exactly like the old one I wouldn't have to do much more than unplug
the old one and plug in the new one with the same cables in the same slots. I
didn't want to have to feel all over a new one and have to figure out where
everything goes. I am lucky if a sighted person comes around once a month
anymore and a sighted person who knows the first thing about electronic devices
is a lot more rare. However, after searching the Internet for a scanner that is
identical to that one I think that they don't make them anymore.
So I am looking for recommendations. Cheap would be good. The one that just
stopped working was one of the cheapest ones around and it lasted a long time.
But the very cheapest may not be necessary. I seem to recall discussion of one
called the Bookedge here in the past and I remembered that it sounded
attractive and I think I recall that it was a bit pricy, but I don't remember
the price. The one that just stopped working was an all in one printer scanner,
but I haven't really had to print anything for over a year. So a built in
printer might not be necessary. But I do worry that as soon as I give up my
printing ability that is when I will need it again. One thing that is fairly
important, though, is that it be fairly easy to set up without sighted
assistance because, like I said, I just don't have much of that anymore. Does
anyone have any advice?
