Mike and I had sort of a similar experience.
Several weeks ago our computer would turn on but not boot up and none of the
peripherals would work.
We asked a neighbor to see if he could find anything, but he could not.
Then several hours later, our modem died. We arranged an appointment with our
carrier (AT&T) to come out and check the modem.
When the technician came out the next day, we got some embarrassing news. The
power strip where all the peripherals were plugged in had been turned off. And
it had been turned off by our cat! The technician flipped the switch and
everything was fine. He thoughtfully moved the power strip to a location where
our cat cannot step unless she gets much smarter (which is possible).
And now we know one more thing to check. Our neighbor had checked all the
plugs, so we were surprised he did not recognize that the strip had been turned
off.
But all is well.

I guess I should add here that I felt I was taking a risk buying this adapter
because in addition to not being able to look at the actual specs, even though
it said it was a replacement for the OpticBook 3600 adapter, you can’t always
assume that you are actually getting what a seller says you are getting.
Just do a search for earpods on Amazon for example; you’ll get all kinds of
results. When I did one last year, I had a devil of a time trying to sort out
the fakes from the genuine article. I had asked Lissi for a pair of earpods for
an anniversary gift and wanted a link to send her. Finally, I just gave up on
Amazon and sent her the link to the Apple site. It was the only way I could be
sure I would get the real thing. And, yes, they are great earbuds.
So even though the seller said it was a replacement adapter for the 3600, I
still felt I was taking a risk. For all I knew, it could have blown out my
scanner for good and all. But, after six and a half years and 570 books, I felt
that it was a small enough risk to be worth taking. And, fortunately, it worked
out great.

I meant to send this earlier, but anyway, on Friday, July 7, my Plustek
OpticBook 3600 scanner abruptly died. I got it in February 2011, so it’s nearly
six and a half years old. I’ve scanned around 570 books with it, and it wasn’t
new when I got it. So while I was understandably disappointed, I wasn’t really
surprised. It did give a little trouble a few weeks before that, and it started
making an odd sound when it returned to the top after scanning a page.
So, when it died, I went outside to read for a bit. When I returned, I noticed
that the adapter was cold, and it had that burnt insulation smell that I’m sure
some of you know well. As you can imagine, I was quite relieved!
Naturally, I went to Plustek first to see if they had a replacement adapter and
how much it would cost. while I was able to find a replacement easily enough,
they gave me a part number, but I found no price, or any link to buy it on
their site.
Next, I went where I usually go to buy online, Amazon. Eleven months ago I got
an adapter for my Pac Mate for less than half of what VFO wants for theirs with
the same specs. It’s worked perfectly since.
I found a replacement adapter for my scanner for just under $20 with shipping.

It works great. I’m on my third book with it and that sound I was geting when
it returned to the top is also gone. (Lissi said it was making that sound
because it was hungry.)
So it’s a good idea to check your adapter when your scanner dies before
spending hundreds on a new one.
