Hi Judy,

Michigan libraries have plenty of copies of the other books in the
series-unfortunately not the two you're looking for.

I can find copies of these two books on Abe Books but, you're right, a bit
pricey. Maybe we could pool resources and purchase the books-I'd be willing
to contribute.

Deborah

Rats. But thanks so much for checking, Misha!

Judy,

Can't help this time, worldcat says the closest libraries to me that have
them are Brigham Young University, University of Utah, ant the Meeteetse
Branch Library. I especially like the last one because Meeteetse is a very
small town in Wyoming that I have been through and which would be a very
appropriate place for a book about a Forest Service dog. But, I'm just not
likely to travel there soon.

I'm looking for help in getting two books into the collection that have
eluded capture. smile. If we can find copies of these two, Bookshare will
become the only library in the world that has all of S. P. Meek's series of
animal books written for young adults in their collection. The novels were
quite popular during the 1930s through to the 1950s, when the author stopped
writing. They always center around a working animal, such as a guide dog, a
police dog, an army cavalry horse, or a border patrol horse, for example,
and that animal's special human. Some of the books are dated in terms of
their portrayal of certain situations, but overall they've weathered well.
Meek was a well-respected army colonel whose books appealed especially to
middle school boys.

The two titles we are missing are:
1. Ranger : A Dog of the Forest Service
and
2. Jerry: The Adventures of an Army Dog

If anyone who scans can find and scan a copy through their library of either
or both of these books I'll be totally grateful, and of course happy to
proofread them. Both titles do become available occasionally through used
booksellers, but are too pricey for me to buy outright.

I also want to take a second and thank all my fellow volunteers who've
helped find the rest of Meek's books. You are all the best! smile. It's
taken a couple of years, but we now have 18 of Meek's 20 young adult novels
in the Bookshare collection.
