Hi Kristin,
If the instructions you were given told you that your document had graphical
ellipses in it, it means that your autocorrect settings in MSWord are turning
three periods typed in a row into a graphical ellipsis instead of just leaving
the three periods. This is important because the Bookshare software that
creates the DAISY files doesn't recognize or translate this character correctly.
I don't know what screen reader or braille display you use. But Jaws will
announce "ellipsis" when you right- or left-arrow past one of these characters,
instead of reading "period period period".
Is this what you experience in your file?
The new proofing guidelines have a section in the Appendix that tells you how
to turn off a number of these graphical characters that can be a problem if you
proofread for Bookshare, as they don't convert correctly.
After you turn off these characters in autocorrect, you can do a
search-and-replace to replace all of these graphical ellipses into "period
period period space"

Hey there everyone!
Hopefully everyone is having a great day today! This is Kristin Mills
with an ellipsis question again and I am sort of confused about which
format we are to use since I was told one way for one of my books and
now the guidelines are explaining something else entirely. Okay here’s
the format I used in my last book of the following of:
A line of text with the three or four periods together with no spaces
A line of text with three or four periods together with a quote behind
them along with no spaces again.
In the new guidelines it’s telling me to have the three periods in a
row so does that mean we are to leave them alone or keep bumping them
up against the text? So is that why they are calling my three periods
without any spaces a graphical ellipsis? If that’s the case, then
should I just remove the periods away from the text? Sorry for the
extremely lengthy e-mail here but I’m not sure of how to correct the
graphical ellipsis’s this time and any help or assistance with this
one would be greatly greatly greatly appreciated! Thanks for your
cooperation and help with this stuff and I do hope everyone is having
a great day!
