Natalie, if there is an ISBN number on the book, you can try to search for the ISBN number on Amazon, B&N and so forth. That may yield the book record with copyright info. You can also call your local library, give them the title, author, and ISBN number and ask them to hunt down the copyright date and holder for you. If you find the info, please integrate it in the front matter of the book before you proceed with validation. If you come up empty, the only course of action is to reject the book.

I just started to validate the Book Resistance by Anita Shreve. I am not finding a copyright date but found the name of the publisher and stuff. Should I automatically reject the book?
