Absolutely. A lot depends on how much general experience in scanning someone has, and how much experience someone has had scanning with a particular tool, (and how willing that person is to take the time to try to get the most out of the scanner and software), as well as how much initiative and conscientiousness someone is willing to put into getting the highest quality out of their scanning irrespective of the tool. In other words, a lot of human factors independent of whatever setup is being used.

A better kind of test, though it would be harder to arrange, would be to try to get the same person to scan the same book with different scanners and software.

Hi Scott,

Just something to think about, but technique depends a lot more on the skill
of the user of any given tool than the tool itself. A truly dedicated user
can make an unreliable tool work wonders or an uninformed user can make a
really stellar tool look inadequate.

Just saying.

Volunteers,

Liz Halperin is doing a bit of research for me on scanning and proofing
techniques. To test she needs three SHORT books submitted by volunteers.
She needs one each scanned by Kurzweil, OpenBook, and OmniPro.

Volunteers who scan with any of these three tools and can locate a short
book to do for her during January please write to me at:
